Commemoration of the Armistice Day

The Armistice Day was commemorated today with a range of manifestations.

With the highest military honours, anthem of the Republic of Serbia and guard of honour of the Guard, a wreath was laid at the Monument to Unknown Soldier on the Avala Mountain, by the Envoy of the President of the Republic of Serbia and Supreme Commander of the Serbian Armed Forces Aleksandar Vučić, Secretary General to the President Nikola Selaković, accompanied by Chief of General Staff of the Serbian Armed Forces General Milan Mojsilović and Commander of the Air Force and Air Defence Major General Duško Žarković.

Following the wreath-laying ceremony Selaković wrote in the Memorial Book:

“The Golgotha of the Great War and your victory in it, have become unavoidable part of Serbian spirit, identity and the system of values, as the most holy example of self-sacrificing and love for the fatherland. Today, when Serbia is on the rise, when it is being built and strengthened, your example inspires a new strength and belief in oneself. Our immortal heroes, may you memory live eternally”.

The central state ceremony at the Charnel House of Defenders of Belgrade in the First World War was led by Minister of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs Zoran Đorđević, while homage paying ceremony to members of armed forces and innocently killed civilians during the First World War was attended by members of the Ministry of Defence and Serbian Armed Forces, representatives of the City of Belgrade, ambassadors and defence attachés accredited to Serbia, associations oriented towards cherishing traditions of liberation wars of Serbia and numerous citizens.

Bay wreaths were laid to mark the state holiday – 11th November, at allies’ military cemeteries from the First World War – at the French military cemetery, at the Memorial charnel house of Russian soldiers fallen in the First World War and at the Commonwealth cemetery.

The Armistice Day is observed in the entire world by state events on 11th November in memory of 11th November 1918, when at 11 o’clock in the morning the truce entered into force in the First World War.
