On the occasion of marking the 22nd anniversary of the Battle of Košare, the Supreme Commander of the Serbian Armed Forces and the President of the Republic, Aleksandar Vučić, laid a wreath today near the Monument to the Heroes of Košare.

After laying the wreath, President Vučić talked to the veterans of this glorious battle and thanked them for everything they did for their homeland.

As part of the commemoration of the anniversary of the legendary battle, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, PhD Nebojša Stefanović, received a delegation of members of the heroic units that took part in the Battle of Košare and defended the border of our country on the frontier post, and tonight a commemorative academy will be held in Kombank Hall in Belgrade.

The battle of Košare began on April 9, 1999, when in the area of the frontier post Košare in the Junički mountains, members of the terrorist KLA, with the help of NATO aviation, tried to carry out a land invasion of FR Yugoslavia and make a breakthrough towards Metohija. Although faced with a far superior opponent, members of the Yugoslav Army offered heroic resistance and prevented the penetration of the enemy. The fighting lasted until June 14, 1999, when the Yugoslav Army withdrew from Kosovo and Metohija after the Kumanovo Agreement.

A monument to the heroes of Košare was erected last year in a park in the immediate vicinity of the Clinical Hospital Center ‘Dr Dragiša Mišović’. The names of 108 soldiers, non-commissioned officers, officers, reservists and volunteers who died in 1999 at the Košare frontier post are engraved on the pedestal.
