Criminal Investigation Group
The purpose of the Military Police Criminal Investigation Group is the planning, organization and execution of tasks and activities of crime suppression in the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces.
The Criminal Investigation Group of the Military Police is directly subordinated to the Military Police Directorate of the General Staff of the Serbian Armed Forces. It consists of the Operations Department, the General Affairs Department, and five centers. The CIG centers are located in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Niš, and Kraljevo.
Members of the Military Police CIG carry out tasks related to the prevention, detection, and investigation of criminal offenses within the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces within their territorial jurisdiction, as well as the suppression of high-tech crime and the implementation of special evidentiary actions using special investigative techniques, with the aim of gathering evidence and solving criminal offenses for which the law предусматриes the application of special evidentiary measures, and whose execution requires specific operational-tactical and technical measures and activities.
In their work, they exercise the powers prescribed by the Law on the Serbian Armed Forces, the Criminal Procedure Code of the Republic of Serbia, the Criminal Code of the Republic of Serbia, and the Law on Police.
Tasks of the Criminal Investigation Group
CIG performs the prevention, detection and documentation of criminal acts under the requests of the responsible prosecutor, and technical and other expert support to the Military Security Agency, as required.
The Criminal Investigation Group cooperates with competent prosecutor offices and courts and acts on their requests in accordance with the prescribed powers.
Also, in performing its tasks, the Criminal Investigation Group directly cooperates with the Ministry of Interior, the Military Security Agency, commands, units and institutions of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces and other government organizations and institutions.
Background of the CIG
Criminal Investigation Group was established by the decision of the Minister of Defence of the Republic of Serbia on May 10, 2006.
Over two decades of its existence, the institution has carried out a wide range of tasks in the field of crime suppression. By undertaking forensic-technical and operational-criminal investigative measures, members of the Military Police CIG have uncovered and documented numerous criminal offenses and submitted valid evidence to the competent prosecutor’s offices for the prosecution of perpetrators.
