Members of the Serbian Armed Forces Autonomous Vessel Protection Detachment within the UN World Food Program arrived to the Republic of Serbia today after a successful deployment in the area of the military operation of the EUNAVFOR ATALANTA.

In the past five months, members of the 72nd Special Operations Brigade have been deployed in providing protection for the Spikerog ship delivering humanitarian aid to the Republic of Somalia.

In conditions of pirate attacks and serious threats to the security of navigation along the coast of Somalia in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean, the Autonomous Vessel Protection Detachment successfully completed all tasks in accordance with the mandate of the ATALANTA operation and represented the Serbian Armed Forces and the Republic of Serbia in a dignified manner.

Serbian Armed Forces have been participating in Operation ATALANTA since April 2012, by deploying staff officers on ships in the Indian Ocean and in the Operational Command on the mainland, and, since December 2013, by periodic deployment of Autonomous Vessel Protection Detachments. This is the eighth team that the Serbian Armed Forces have deployed in this European Union military operation.
