TRANSFORMATION OF THE RIVERINE

At today’s ceremony on the banks of the Danube, the SAF Riverine was awarded the SAF flag. While presenting the flag to the commander of the riverine Navy Captain Nebojsa Joksimovic, the Chief of SAF GS Lt. Gen. Zdravko Ponos, as an envoy of the President of Serbia, stressed that the decision that pontoon units leave Army 1st brigade and become part of the Riverine as a result of experiences attained after the reorganization of SAF in 2007.
At today’s ceremony on the banks of the Danube, the SAF Riverine was awarded the SAF flag. While presenting the flag to the commander of the riverine Navy Captain Nebojsa Joksimovic, the Chief of SAF GS Lt. Gen. Zdravko Ponos, as an envoy of the President of Serbia, stressed that the decision that pontoon units leave Army 1st brigade and become part of the Riverine as a result of experiences attained after the reorganization of SAF in 2007.
“In this way we place all forces, which carry out their tasks within internal water ways, under one command. This enables us to successfully perform the third mission of SAF, which means providing relief and addressing consequences in the aftermath of technical accidents and natural disasters, said General Ponos, pointing out that this kind or organization of the Riverine enables quick response in saving people, and salvaging property and providing assistance to other ships in cases of fire, accidents and other accidents in water ways.
“Bear in mind that you are the only unit of this type in SAF and that we have no substitute units” stated POnos expressing his trust in the preparedness of units to carry out their mission in 1600 km of water ways which they cover, while stationed in Sabac, Belgrade and Novi Sad.
The Riverine has a command, and a logistics company, two river regiments with 15 ships and boats of various names, 2 pontoon battalions.
The ceremony was also attended by Lt. Gen. Mladen Cirkovic, army commander, and the representatives of MoD, SAF GS, commanders of brigades, the Mayor of Novi sad Igor Pavlicic, and the local self-government ,and numerous other guests.
Numerous citizens of Novi Sad followed the parade with great interest.
