Strengthening Capabilities of Serbian Armed Forces in Pirot

Today, Chief of the Serbian Armed Forces General Staff, General Milan Mojsilović, accompanied by his associates, has visited the “3rd Infantry Regiment” Barracks in Pirot. In addition to the existing logistics units, a tactical unit at the battalion level will be redeployed and stationed there early next year.
During the visit, he inspected the organization of daily life and operations, as well as the progress of infrastructure projects intended to accommodate the new unit and its personnel. Also present were Mayor of Pirot, Vladan Vasić, and the Chief of the Logistics Directorate (J-4) of the General Staff, Major General Saša Petrović.
Following his visit, General Mojsilović has pointed out that he had come to Pirot with the intention of assessing the actual situation regarding the fulfillment of obligations—as defined by the strategic directives of the President of the Republic—concerning the enhancement of the Serbian Armed Forces’ operational capabilities and the manning of certain new locations and garrisons within the Republic of Serbia.
“I would like to announce that, as early as 2027, the Pirot garrison will undergo a process of renewal and revitalization of its existing infrastructure. Naturally, this entire process will be accompanied by the development of operational capabilities and the redeployment of a tactical unit from the central part of the Republic of Serbia to the Pirot garrison. From an operational standpoint, we are satisfied with how the process is unfolding.
Equipment has been procured, plans are being implemented in line with our vision—the concept is in place, we possess the necessary capabilities—and I expect the first phase to be fully completed by 2027. I would also like to highlight that this will be the easternmost point in Serbia where the Serbian Armed Forces are present,” said General Mojsilović.
Recently, two facilities for housing soldiers were reconstructed—one with a capacity of up to 200, and the other for up to 100 soldiers. Facilities for units already stationed here have also been renovated, and the barracks have been connected to the gas distribution network.
Next month, the renovation of the medical clinic, dining facility, kitchen, food storage, and fuel station will begin. These works will improve the conditions for accommodation, catering, healthcare, and logistical support for the units and soldiers who will be stationed at the barracks.
With the reinstatement of mandatory military service—depending on the specific model adopted—there will be up to 300 soldiers stationed at the barracks in Pirot. The Serbian Armed Forces will aim, whenever possible and in line with operational requirements, to ensure that recruits from Pirot and the surrounding area serve their military obligation in this very city.
Vladan Vasić, Mayor of Pirot, has stated that the return of the military is one of the most significant strategic objectives for the city of Pirot.
“The city is getting its garrison back. We can view this from several perspectives: from an economic standpoint—since the military is a major consumer—and from the perspective of addressing depopulation, as people will return here with their families. They will have children who will attend kindergarten and school. In terms of employment opportunities, the military will provide many jobs. And, of course, there is the security aspect. Pirot is eagerly awaiting 2027 and the return of the military,” Vasić pointed out.
