Serbian Armed Forces Tasked with Road Reconstruction near Prokuplje

For the past two weeks, members of the Serbian Armed Forces have been tasked with the reconstruction of a road connecting the villages of Merovac, Belogoš, and Donja Rečica, in the territory of the Town of Prokuplje.

The work on this six-kilometer-long stretch is being carried out by an engineer task force from the 310th Engineer Battalion, 3rd Army Brigade, as part of their regular training and in cooperation with the Prokuplje public utility company.

As explained by the road section commander, Staff Sergeant 1st Class Petar Ilić, the road had sustained significant damage due to long-term use, so repair work began on October 20.

“So far, we have cleared the vegetation and widened the road on both sides, patched potholes, and dug culverts for surface water drainage. We are now adding fill material, leveling the surface, and compacting the roadbed. The local residents are pleased; they welcomed us warmly and are very happy. This is the only road that connects these three villages,” explained Staff Sergeant Ilić. He added that members of the 310th Engineer Battalion had also assisted the local community last month when, at the initiative of the Municipality of Bela Palanka, they arranged the churchyard of the Monastery of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God, in the village of Veta.

Vladica Jovanović, president of the local community of the village of Belogoš, explained that the road had not been maintained for some time; he added that, in addition to residents from the three aforementioned villages, people from another ten to twelve villages also use this stretch to go to school, work, and the doctor’s.

“The road is a vital element of our lives; I don’t know how we would have made it through the winter if this hadn’t been done. I can only say a huge ‘thank you’ to both the military and the municipality—especially to the unit that arrived on-site with construction machinery. The villagers are at a loss for words to express their joy over road improvements, as without it, we are completely cut off from the rest of the world,” Jovanović pointed out.

In accordance with their annual engagement plans, the engineering units of the Serbian Armed Forces carry out similar projects in other parts of the country as well. In doing so—beyond enhancing their training and proficiency in executing engineering tasks during military operations—the Serbian Armed Forces provide support to local communities, demonstrating that they are always at the service of the homeland and the citizens of the Republic of Serbia.
