Military Working Dogs and Their Handlers Trained for Protecting Military Property

At the Dog Training Center in Niš, a multi-week course is underway aimed at training handlers and MWDs for engagement in protecting and providing security of facilities and mobile assets of the Serbian Armed Forces.

This course is intended to train members of the Serbian Armed Forces for the roles of dog handlers in the units and to train dogs that have been bred in the Center and selected for guard service based on their innate characteristics.

In accordance with the training program, the handlers use MWDs to carry out various exercises at the Knjaz Mihailo Barracks’ specialized training ground, in order to gain mutual trust and enable complete control and efficient management of the dog during the tasks. The main part of the course consists of practical actions of general training, overcoming obstacles and doing exercises to improve dogs’ vigilance and response to various threats both in the daytime and at night.

After completing the training in mid-March, the military working dogs and their handlers will be assigned to SAF units, where they will be engaged in the tasks of providing security to military facilities and property.
Training for the guard service is only one of many training forms carried out by the Dog Training Center — a specialized SAF unit intended for training, health care, breeding and reproduction of MWDs, as well as training and career development of veterinary service personnel — helping with the improvement of security of property used by the Serbian Armed Forces.
