Training of Handlers and Military Working Dogs in Military Police Units
Wednesday, 5.8.2026 | Training
Intensive training is currently underway for professional personnel within the Serbian Armed Forces’ MP units to carry out MP and general security tasks for the Ministry of Defense and the Serbian Armed Forces.
An important training segment in these units involves working with MWDs, which are irreplaceable companion dogs of MP officers, particularly when tasked with protection and security of facilities, mobile assets and personnel, and used for tracking operations.
Depending on the dogs’ intended use—which stems from their innate abilities—they undergo training in overcoming natural and artificial obstacles, searching terrain, conducting anti-sabotage check-ups, and detecting mines and explosive devices and various types of psychoactive substances.
The goal is to establish a relationship of complete trust between the handler and service dog through diverse exercises, to practice prescribed procedures, and to ensure effective control and handling of the dog, even in the most challenging situations.
Training within MP units is diverse and demanding, and a high level of proficiency and skills in executing tasks with service dogs is of great importance due to the dogs’ ability to detect potential threats and defeat an enemy quickly and without the use of lethal force.
