The mechanized units of the Serbian Armed Forces are conducting intensive training with the IFVs M-80 AB1/V2, whose maneuverability and fire capabilities have been improved in the process of modernization, as well as the level of their armor protection.

Permanent vehicle crews and embarked mechanized squads are undergoing all practical training contents — from preparation for the implementation of the task, camouflage, applying the tactics on the move and on the battlefield, to maintaining all IFV sub-systems and weaponry.

According to the commander of the 37th Mechanized Battalion, Lt. Col. Milan Kuburić, in accordance with the equipment plan, the unit has recently been equipped with a modernized M-80 AB1/V2 infantry vehicle, which significantly improved the battalion’s operational capabilities.

— One of the most important training contents in the 37th Mechanized Battalion in 2026 is training with modernized assets. In addition to receiving modernized IFVs, M-20 modular automatic weapons were also received, and the procedure for receiving the M-19 modular rifle is underway. The quality and reliability of these weapons will be checked during the execution of a live-fire tactical exercise in February this year, said Lt. Col. Kuburić.

The commander of the mechanized company, Captain 1st Class Milenko Stepančević, has pointed out that with the installation of a remotely controlled combat station, instead of the previous mechanical start of the turret, the position of the gunner-instrument operator was moved from the turret to the body of the vehicle.

— An automatic grenade launcher, 30 mm caliber, was installed, and the existing solutions for the cannon and coupled machine gun were retained. The modernized IFV can now also use the “Maljutka” anti-tank guided missile, with semi-automatic guidance, while only manual guidance was possible in the basic variant. By adding ballistic plates to the body of the vehicle, ballistic protection was improved, the undercarriage was also enhanced, and by moving the tank and installing a hydraulic mobile ramp instead of the door, easier and faster work of the embarked unit was made possible. Overall, working with the combat vehicle is easier and safer, and combat capabilities significantly improved — said Captain Stepancevic.

Lance Corporal Dušan Milenković, BVP M-80 AB1/V2 gunner-operator, points out that he has more responsibility now, but also that the vehicle’s capabilities are by far greater that those of its basic version.

— The impression from the training so far is that we are equipped with a modern and powerful asset, which, as far as my role is concerned, brings completely new work experience and opportunities. We are still mastering all of the BVP M-80AB1/V2 capabilities, and I believe that during the exercises we will confirm the characteristics of the modernized combat vehicle –LCpl Milenkovic stated.

The 3rd Army Brigade members are now expected to conduct tactical drills and live firing, when they are supposed to confirm their ability to perform tactical and fire missions in offensive and defensive operations.

Along with tank units, mechanized battalions are the linchpin of maneuver in the operations of the Army, their members undergoing training in all weather conditions throughout the year. This leads to achieving the required level of competence for each individual, team efficiency and speed of reaction, which, along with reliable combat vehicles, plays a critical part in the rapid introduction of units into combat, providing proper fire support and protection of the Serbian Armed Forces units.
