A military ceremony marking sending off the new Serbian Armed Forces contingent to the United Nations peacekeeping operation in Lebanon was held today at the Bačka barracks in Bačka Topola.

The contingent consists of an infantry company from the 1st Army Brigade, staff officers and a group of specialists in charge of providing support. It is going to be deployed in Sector East of the United Nations peacekeeping operation and will perform responsible peacekeeping tasks in this Middle Eastern country.

Before their deployment, the Serbian Armed Forces members underwent comprehensive preparations and months of training at the Serbian Armed Forces training areas and grounds, in order to be fully prepared for engagement in the peacekeeping operation. In Lebanon, they will take over the duty from the Serbian Armed Forces members who have successfully executed all assigned tasks in accordance with the mission’s mandate over the past six months.

The ceremony was attended by representatives of the General Staff and the Serbian Armed Forces units, local government bodies and religious communities, as well as relatives and friends of the soldiers and officers who are to deploy to the mission.

The Serbian Armed Forces started participating in the United Nations peacekeeping operation in Lebanon in 2010. In addition to the contingent in Sector East, a force protection platoon of the Serbian Armed Forces is currently engaged in Sector West.
