The final phase of the six-month training of mine and explosion detection dogs and handlers is underway at the Dog Training Centre of the Serbian Armed Forces in Niš.

Non-commissioned officers are being trained as dog handlers in special and military police units at "Knjaz Mihailo" barracks. They will be engaged in anti-sabotage protection tasks, while selected search dogs bred at the Centre are trained for this purpose.

Service dog handlers practice anti-sabotage inspections and searches of objects and movable assets, and the focus is on sharpening and directing the sense of smell of service dogs in order to efficiently identify trails and find hidden or discarded explosives. The handlers have previously undergone basic training in order to gain mutual trust and enable complete control and efficient guidance of the dog during the tasks.

This is one of the most complex and demanding forms of training carried out in the Centre, and with its successful completion, the Serbian Armed Forces gets handlers and service dogs trained for anti-sabotage protection of persons, facilities and vehicles, as well as other tasks in anti-terrorist operations, where trained service dogs can be used.
