Day of the Telecommunications Service and Day of the Signal Brigade have been ceremonially marked in the Serbian Armed Forces today, highlighting two significant anniversaries: 110 years of the Telecommunications Service and two decades since the formation of the Signal Brigade.
A formal ceremony marking the Telecommunications Service anniversary was held at the Guard’s Club at the “Topčider” Barracks. Attendees included the Deputy Chief of the Serbian Armed Forces General Staff, Lieutenant General Tiosav Janković, members of the General Staff Collegium, and representatives of Ministry of Defence and Serbian Armed Forces units.
Addressing the attendees, Major General Mile Vitezović, Chief of the Telecommunications and IT Directorate (J-6), highlighted the service’s long tradition and the contribution made by generations of its personnel in ensuring reliable and uninterrupted communications. He has pointed out the pivotal role modern communication systems play in the execution of the Serbian Armed Forces’ missions and tasks, and emphasized the importance of modernization, introduction of new technologies, and investment in the knowledge and professional development of personnel.
Speaking about current tasks, General Vitezović highlighted the digitalization of the Serbian Armed Forces through the “Digital Army” project, the establishment of a special communications system, and the application of artificial intelligence, including the development of the first military digital assistant.
“We are living in an era of rapid technological change and new security challenges. Digitalization, robotization, information security, cyber defense, and artificial intelligence are no longer merely support elements but key factors in the accomplishment of missions and tasks. Therefore, our task is to continue with modernization and investment in new technologies—and, above all, in people—for the knowledge and dedication of our experts constitute our greatest strength," concluded the Chief of the Telecommunications and IT Directorate.
The academy program featured the premiere of the documentary film “Telecommunications System of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces”, produced by the “Zastava Film” Military Film Center, as well as a performance titled “In Touch with the Fatherland”. On this occasion, General Vitezović presented certificates of appreciation and plaques to deserving civilian entities, military institutions, and units.
Earlier today, a military ceremony was held at the “Banjica” barracks to mark the Signal Brigade Day and the 20th anniversary of its formation. On this occasion, awards were presented to the most outstanding individuals, and wreaths were laid at the memorial within the barracks.
Telecommunications Service Day and Signal Brigade Day are observed on September 20th to commemorate the 1916 Decree on the Military Telegraph, which laid the foundations for the signal service within the Serbian Army.
