The delegation of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Serbia led by State Secretary Dusan Spasojevic opened the celebration of 130 years of the diplomatic relations between Italy and Serbia.
State Secretary Dusan Spasojevic in his address stressed that during these very tumultuous 130 years of diplomatic relations between Serbia and Italy there had been ups and downs, yet, we could safely say that these two countries are friends which fact is seen in a very successful military cooperation.
Good bilateral cooperation between Italy and Serbia not only boosts the relations between the two countries in general but also adds to an overall stability in the region. The ministry of defense and SAF participate in all important regional initiatives having established a very good cooperation between the Ministries of Defense of Serbia and Italy and the two armies.
Recalling the political security situation in the region, especially as regards the Kosovo and Metohija, Spaosjevic pointed out the fundaments of state policy regarding this issue, stressing that Serbia would never recognize Kosovo as an independent state. The fact that KFOR is involved in forming the Kosovo security forces had caused great concern to Serbia and great displeasure, as these forces represent a potential threat to the stability and peace in the region.
State Secretary Spasojevic presented the priorities of the Ministry of Defense’s work in the upcoming period, especially in the area of international military cooperation which would greatly add to realizing the main priorities of our foreign policy.
The Undersecretary of Italy for Defense Giuseppe Cossiga expressed his pleasure with the fact that the bilateral cooperation between the two countries had reached such a high level stressing that this form of cooperation was the main incentive for the general cooperation between the two countries, as is the case here.
Italy provides full support to Serbia in its efforts to remain on the European path, Cosiga pointed out, expressing his belief that any current obstacles would soon be overcome.
At the ceremony held at the Center of Defense CollegeStudies, the present guests were addressed by the SAF Air Force Commander Major General Dragan Katanic who presented the results achieved so far in the reforms of SAF.
On behalf of the Italian side, Deputy Chief of Italian GS General Domenico Vilanni spoke.
In his address, the Chairman of the Defense Committee of the Lower Dome of the Italian Parliament Edmundo Cirielli stressed the importance of both countries preserving the regional stability, pointing out his personal opinion that the unilateral declaration of Kosovo independence was a rash move and a consequence of political agendas. He maintained that the Italian contingent in KFOR would within its jurisdiction preserve the stability of Serbs and of Serbian sacred places.
The ceremony will last till 23rd January where also several ministries of the two countries will participate.
