A send-off ceremony for a new contingent of the Serbian Armed Forces deploying to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has been held in the ‘National Hero Stevica Jovanović’ barracks in Pančevo today.

The contingent that will be a part of the UN peacekeeping force in this Middle Eastern country over the next six months is comprised of a First Army Brigade’s infantry company and staff officers.

The infantry company will carry out the tasks in the area of operations as an autonomous unit within the Spanish battalion, while the staff officers will be engaged on duties in the mission headquarters. The Serbian Armed Forces personnel previously completed comprehensive preparations and several months of training in order to be fully prepared for the deployment to a peacekeeping operation.

Today’s ceremony was attended by representatives of Ministry of Defence, SAF units, local self-government bodies and the Serbian Orthodox Church, as well as relatives and friends of soldiers, NCOs and officers deploying to the mission.

The Serbian Armed Forces’ contribution to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon began in 2010. Currently, the Serbian Armed Forces deploy to this mission an infantry company, a force protection platoon, staff officers and a group of specialist officers tasked to provide support to our contingent.
