Formal Reception on the occasion of the Serbian Armed Forces Day

Mr Nebojsa Rodic, Minister of Defence in the caretaker government and General Ljubisa Dikovic, Serbian Armed Forces Chief of General Staff hosted the evening reception in the House of Guard in Topcider on the occasion of 23rd April – the Day of the Serbian Armed Forces.

The ceremony was attended by President Tomislav Nikolic, representatives of the legislative, executive and judicial powers, Patriarch Irinej of Serbia, representatives of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces, religious communities, foreign military officials and diplomats, public and cultural figures and numerous guests.

Welcoming the audience, Minister Rodic said that today we are marking the biggest military holiday – the Day of the Serbian Armed Forces.

- The period immediately behind us, between the two holidays of ours, was the period of intense organizational and other changes in the Serbian Armed Forces and the Ministry of Defence, that, along with the ones that are yet to come, but are not less significant, should result in greater operability, organizational readiness, and combat readiness and the overall readiness of the Serbian Armed Forces.

The Minister of Defence said that the development of the Serbian Armed Forces through history will significantly determine the way ahead.

- Drawing on the traditions and values acquired through the history, the Serbian Armed Forces still has a clear vision for the development, achieving its main goal – the defence of the country and contribution to peace. It remains committed to the tradition and military experience, but also follows the development of military thought and contemporary trends of security and defence, Minister Rodic said, adding that the success that was achieved on the path of reforms was significant.

The greatest progress has been made in creating a doctrinal framework of the new system of training management, development of the concept of operational capabilities, reform of military education, professionalization, the development of skills for participation in multinational operations and the establishment of the chaplaincy service.

- In the last year, in difficult economic conditions which whole our society was faced with, the Serbian Armed Forces managed once again to prove itself as the most stable, most reliable and most vital part of our community, performing all its regular activities diligently, devotedly and laboriously, but also providing assistance and taking an active and key role in situations that required a special kind of knowledge, know-how and skills, and courage of course, when needed to help our citizens throughout the territory of the homeland, Rodic emphasized.

He stressed that the Serbian Armed Forces participates in the United Nations multinational operations and the European Union crisis management operations, which is of great importance for the foreign policy, national security and the development of the defence system.

- Deploying its forces, the army contributes to security, resolving problems, and maintaining peace, providing support for the realization of other strategic goals and enhances the reputation of Serbia in the international community. The highest value of the members of our armed forces is in their knowledge, a high level of practice and training for work, decent demeanour in the military vocation, exceptional experience and unwavering determination to defend their homeland at all costs and protect their citizens, said the Minister of Defence, adding that the successful engagement of resources in emergency situations in our country, provided full contribution to the promotion and strengthening of the reputation of the armed forces and the confidence of the citizens of Serbia in it.

- The strategic direction of the development of our armed forces is essentially determined by our state policy, especially our foreign policy, based on military neutrality, but also on intense international military cooperation in all aspects and with all factors involved in the field of security – from regional to the global level, through modalities which are very diverse, from participation in the international peacekeeping missions to particularly important and highly intensified cooperation in the area of military education, Minister Rodic said.

According to him, the main tasks of the Ministry of Defence will be focused on the further development of our armed forces, their immediate, additional modernization, development and acquisition of the latest combat equipment and systems, in line with the overall capabilities of the state, as well as maintaining the strategic direction of active and comprehensive military cooperation.

- Members of the Armed Forces are primarily citizens of Serbia that unconditionally love and understand their country and its people, and share the fate of our entire society in every aspect, Minister Rodic said at the reception in the House of Guard, and congratulating on the Armed Forces Day he concluded his address with: Long live the Serbian Armed Forces! Long live Serbia!

The Serbian Armed Forces celebrates its holiday – 23rd April, marking the beginning of the Second Serbian Uprising in 1815, a milestone in the creation of the modern Serbian state and armed forces.
