Posthumous UN Award for Lieutenant Colonel Dejan Stanojević

SAF Lieutenant Colonel Dejan Stanojević, who was killed in the UN mission in DR Congo on 29 March 2022, was awarded a posthumous UN medal. 

This was the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal, awarded as a tribute to the members of UN international forces who were killed while performing the tasks of building and safeguarding peace in the world.

At the ceremony held yesterday in New York on the occasion of the International Day of UN Peacekeepers, the medal was handed by António Guterres, Secretary General of this organization. On behalf of the family of Lieutenant Colonel Stanojević, the award was received by members of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Serbia to the UN. 

Lieutenant Colonel Dejan Stanojević was born on 22 December 1979, and served in the Serbian Armed Forces since 28 September 2002. He was killed in a helicopter crash on 29 March while performing a regular air reconnaissance task in the UN mission in DR Congo.

The Serbian Armed Forces lost an honorable and excellent officer, expert of the electronic warfare units. He received multiple awards and commendations during his distinguished military career. He is survived by a wife and two underage children.
