A military ceremony on the occasion of the departure of the Serbian Armed Forces new contingent to the United Nations peacekeeping operation in Lebanon was held today at the "Ribnica" barracks in Kraljevo.

The Serbian Armed Forces contingent, which will be the part of the UNIFIL for the next six months, includes an infantry company from the 2nd Army Brigade, staff officers and a national support element.

They will carry out responsible tasks in maintaining peace in the area of operation in Lebanon and thus continue the long tradition of our military's deployment in the United Nations peacekeeping operations, which began 65 years ago in the same crisis region.

The ceremony was attended by the Deputy Chief of the SAF General Staff, Lieutenant General Petar Cvetković, who on this occasion handed over the state flag to the commander of the infantry company, Major Dobrica Veličković, expressing confidence that this contingent will diligently and responsibly perform the assigned tasks, present the character and work of members of the Serbian Armed Forces with dignity and build good relations with all actors in Lebanon.

Members of the Serbian Armed Forces began deployment in this peacekeeping operation on December 21, 2010. In addition to the infantry company, which performs tasks as part of the Spanish battalion and staff officers with the national support element in the Sector "East", the Serbian Armed Forces also deploy a Force Protection platoon within the Italian contingent in the Sector "West".
